As one of the first Chief AI Officers in a global enterprise, Tomi built TD Bank’s AI program from the ground up. He combined foundational infrastructure investments with a world-class AI Center of Excellence and deep partnership with business leaders to make AI operational at scale—positioning TD as an industry leader in turning AI into real, measurable value.
Our Story
Signal 1 was born out of a simple but urgent observation: Healthcare AI wasn’t living up to its promise — not because the technology didn’t work, but because health systems weren’t building the capabilities and operating models to manage it at scale. Founded in 2021 by AI pioneer Tomi Poutanen and MIT-trained economist Mara Lederman, Signal 1 brought together a rare convergence of expertise. Tomi had spent his career at the forefront of AI, deploying it at scale across industries including online search and financial services, and most recently serving as Chief AI Officer at TD Bank. Mara had spent her career studying market dynamics and organizational design and understood that the barriers to creating business value from AI in healthcare were as much organizational and cultural as they were technical. After working together for years mentoring AI start-ups at the Creative Destruction Lab, the world’s leading accelerator for AI-based companies, they set out to provide the missing layer. With a passionate and ambitious team, they developed Signal 1’s AI Management System (AIMS), a category-defining platform that gives health system stakeholders, including technical, operational, and executive leaders, the visibility and control they need to manage their growing AI portfolios for value and risk. Purpose-built for healthcare, Signal 1 is committed to enabling the responsible adoption and scaling of AI in healthcare – empowering health systems to translate AI innovation into real clinical, operational, and financial outcomes, without compromising on safety, trust, or accountability.
