Our Leadership Team
Tomi Poutanen
Chief Executive Officer
Tomi is the CEO and co-founder of Signal 1. Before Signal 1, Tomi co-founded Layer 6 which was acquired by TD Bank where he served as the Chief AI Officer. Tomi has had previous exits to Microsoft and Yahoo!. Tomi holds an MSc in Computer Engineering and an MBA from University of Toronto, and is a co-founder of Vector Institute for AI.
Mara Lederman
Chief Operating Officer
Mara is the COO and a co-founder of Signal 1. Prior to Signal 1, Mara was a professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and the Site Lead for the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) – Toronto Site. Mara is an expert in platform economics and start-up commercialization strategy. She holds a Ph.D in Economics from MIT.
Austin Awes
Senior Vice President, Growth
Austin is Senior Vice President of Growth at Signal 1. He brings over two decades of healthcare sales and growth leadership experience. Previously, he was VP of Sales at Commure and held executive roles at Infor, where he boosted revenue from $4M to $100M and expanded their clinical interoperability solutions globally.
Felipe Perez
VP, Machine Learning
Felipe is the VP of Machine Learning at Signal 1. Prior to joining Signal 1, Felipe was a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at Layer 6 where he led a team doing Natural Language Processing and Recommender System research and building AI applications for TD Insurance. Felipe received his Ph.D in Math from the University of Michigan.
Bo Wang
VP, Platforms & Delivery
Bo is the VP of Platforms and Delivery at Signal 1. Prior to joining Signal 1, Bo was the Head of Data and Infrastructure at Layer 6. He is an experienced technology leader in distributed systems, complex data-intensive systems, infrastructure, security and project delivery. Bo has a Ph.D in Computer Science from Peking University.
Pete Cronin
VP, Business Operations
Pete is the VP of Business Operations at Signal 1. Before Signal 1, Pete was an Executive Director at Unity Health Toronto focused on creating commercialization strategies and broadening the impact of locally developed clinical AI solutions. Pete is an ex-McKinsey consultant and received his MBA from Cornell University.
Dan Shiner
VP, Product
Dan is the VP of Product at Signal 1. Prior to joining, he co-founded an HR technology startup and was VP of Product at Xero, where he was responsible for the company’s AI-powered automation products. He also served as Head of Product at Hubdoc Inc., an AI-driven data automation tool, from it’s early days until its acquisition by Xero in 2018. Dan holds a dual JD/MBA degree from the University of Toronto.
Patrick Ware
VP, Quality and Regulatory Affairs
Patrick is the VP of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at Signal 1. Prior to joining, he was the Lead for Program and Business Development at the Centre for Digital Therapeutics, University Health Network. He was also Course Developer and instructor at The Michener Institute of Education. Patrick holds a PhD in Health Sciences Research, with a focus in health informatics, from the University of Toronto and a Master of Public Health from the University of Montreal.
Alice Yang
VP, Finance & HR
Alice is the VP of Finance and HR at Signal 1. Prior to Signal 1, Alice was the Head of Operations at Layer 6 where she led strategy execution and various business functions while overseeing AI applications in banking. Alice is an ex-corporate banker and a CFA Charterholder. She received her MBA from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Muhammad Mamdani
Chief Scientific Advisor
Muhammad is the VP of Data Science and Advanced Analytics at Unity Health Toronto. Muhammad’s team integrates advanced analytics with clinical decision-making to improve patient outcomes and hospital efficiency. Muhammad holds a PharmD from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Public Health from Harvard University.
Maksims Volkovs
AI Scientist in Residence
Maks is an AI Scientist in Residence at Signal 1. He is a co-founder of Layer 6 and the Chief AI Scientist at TD Bank. Maks is a Kaggle Grandmaster and has multiple publications in top machine learning conferences and journals. He received his Ph.D from University of Toronto where he was part of the Machine Learning Group led by Geoffrey Hinton.
